Corporate
sustainability

We believe that sustainability is inextricably linked to the future success of our business and that we need to act to help address the global challenges relating to climate change, limited resources and economic and social inequality. In doing so, we hope to build a successful and resilient business that embraces positive change and strives to reduce the environmental impact of our operations.

Our approach to sustainability

We are continually looking at how we can perform better and contribute to the long-term sustainability of our operations, alongside our focus on responsible investing and our employees. We believe our active and broad approach to stewardship supports us in delivering strong and durable performance to our clients and to meet our broader investment responsibilities. Our strategy covers two key areas:

Environmental sustainability

The Group is committed to operating its business activities in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. We have taken steps to better understand the environmental impacts of our operations to identify how we can reduce our footprint. Our Environmental Policy sets out our approach to managing our environmental impacts and commitments to improve our performance.

We have established an Environmental Committee that oversees the implementation of the Policy on behalf of the Premier Miton Board. The Committee includes employees from varying roles across Premier Miton and an external consultant who specialises in embedding corporate sustainability practices. The Committee meets regularly to review current environmental performance, to identify new initiatives and plan activities.

What we do

One of the fundamental aims is to determine how Premier Miton can contribute to supporting the UK Government’s commitment to meet net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.

To date, we have taken steps to:

Managing our energy use
  • Reviewed electricity suppliers and started the switch to suppliers with renewable energy tariffs
  • Monitor our energy use every quarter (where we pay the supplier bill)
  • Commissioned a third-party specialist consultant to undertake an energy audit and propose actions for energy reduction, which are now being considered
  • Raising awareness of energy efficiency in our offices by communicating with our employees
  • Engaging with the managing agents of the offices we occupy to improve energy efficiency.
Using resources efficiently
  • Removed all single-use cups from our offices and encouraged employees to use reusable ones instead.
  • Switching to products made with recycled materials
  • Employees are encouraged to avoid printing where possible; where we are printing documents we aim to print black and white and on FSC certified paper
  • We are engaging with suppliers with robust environmental credentials.
Managing our waste
  • Recycling bins are provided in all our offices, and we encourage employees to separate waste to improve our recycling rate
  • Waste bins are being removed from individual desks.
Supporting biodiversity
  • We are ‘gold’ corporate partners of the Surrey Wildlife Trust and London Wildlife Trust who help to look after wildlife and inspire local people to care for the natural world.

Our carbon footprint

We have continued to make good progress towards our aim to have a better understanding of our environmental impact and, through our dedicated Environmental Committee, have a number of initiatives to improve our carbon performance.

We actively measure our operational carbon emissions and prepare a carbon report at the end of each financial year. This report helps to identify key areas where we hope to reduce our emissions, such as through energy efficiency measures and less business travel.

Offsetting our operational carbon footprint

Although our primary focus is to reduce our carbon emissions, we continue to pursue offsets for our residual footprint. In 2021 we chose to offset our operational carbon footprint via the ‘plant a tree – protect a tree’ initiative. This initiative supports tree planting projects in schools around the UK. It is paired with the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) approved United Nations programme for ‘Reducing Emissions from Deforestation & Forest Degradations’ (REDD) in Brazil.

CDP climate change disclosure programme

In recognition of the urgent challenge we all face from climate change, we sought to gain a better understanding of the risks and potential opportunities climate change poses to us and share how we are developing our business strategy to consider climate-related issues via the CDP global disclosure system. This process will help manage our environmental impacts.

In 2020 we participated for the first time in the carbon disclosure programme (CDP) by submitting a climate change response for Premier Miton Group plc. The aim of this work is to set an internal benchmark for our climate change performance and to highlight areas where we need to improve. For 2021 we were delighted to achieve a score of B-. This is the same level as the global average. Within this overall score, we achieved an A for emissions reduction initiatives and A- for Governance. You can find out more about CDP by visiting their website at  www.cdp.net.

Looking forward, we will be taking the learnings from the CDP response process and continue our focus to support the transition to a net-zero carbon economy.
